The Long Road into Night #21

On the 21st day, the dark road stretches on.  Since the beginning, you’ve had a purpose, a meaning to go on.  Your left foot though was getting heavier with every step and your right was quick to follow.  It is everything you can do now, to put one foot in front of the other.

“Are you okay?” the small voice beside you asked.

You almost forgot about your young companion with the glowing eyes for a moment.  Then it dawned on you that you actually did.

How is that possible?

She has been by your side for… how long?

Then the question pops into your head.  What was her name?

It takes you a moment, but you remember her saying, it was–––Ellie.  This worries you.  Not only are the memories of your past gone, but could it be possible that your current ones are slipping away too.

“You really should stop scratching,” Ellie suggested with concern.  “Your hands are looking really bad.”

You look down at your hands.  Spots where you had actually scratched away the skin were bloody.

Hadn’t they been bloody before?

Your stomach suddenly growls, and pain stabs through your belly.  You are so hungry, but you had just eaten… when?  You couldn’t remember the last time you ate.  How is that possible?

“Maybe, we should take a rest,” Ellie suggested.

You look at her.  The pain was getting worse.

Who the hell was this little girl?

There are only 10 more days until Halloween.
